We are the first UK-headquartered energy company to join the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA).

What is the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA)?

The Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA) has a mission to protect the environment and the people who are directly affected by mining.

It does this by setting best practice, independently assessing mines, and a unique governance model which provides civil society and workers equal power to industry.

Why is responsible mining important to SSE?

Sustainability is one of our core values. We strive to do the right thing for people and the planet. As a large energy company, we naturally interact with the environment in many ways, presenting challenges that need to be managed. Supporting responsible mining is one way we try to do the right thing for our environment.

"The supply chains for the energy transition are underpinned by minerals and metals. Although SSE doesn’t source directly from mining companies, we still have a part to play in promoting sustainable practices. By joining IRMA, SSE is voicing our support for responsible mining that takes account of the interests and needs of stakeholders who have traditionally been unheard – a critical aspect of a just transition."

"We welcome SSE as the newest IRMA member and commend their leadership in sustainability. We especially appreciate SSE's willingness to engage directly in support of more responsible mining. It’s an important signal that every point in the supply chain has a part to play."
