SSEN Transmission The Existing Overhead Line Between Dunoon And West Of Loch Long Will Be Replaced As Part Of The Project (1)
  • Project will replace aging electricity infrastructure between Dunoon and Loch Long

SSEN Transmission is pleased to have received Section 37 consent from Scottish Ministers for its proposed 132kV overhead line (OHL) rebuild project in Dunoon, a critical upgrade to the region’s electricity infrastructure and a boost to energy security and clean power targets.

The project will enhance local network resilience and replace aging infrastructure – some of which was originally installed in the 1970s – which will help future-proof the transmission network in Argyll and Bute.

The consent covers the installation and operation of approximately 18km of replacement double-circuit overhead line between Dunoon Substation and west of where the overhead line crosses Loch Long.  This includes installing 77 new steel towers varying between 23m and 39m tall, at spans of around 230m on average.

The network to the east of Loch Long is operated by SP Energy Networks, where the Dunoon rebuild project will connect in.

Once the new line is operational, the existing 132kV line will be dismantled and removed.

Laura McWilliams, Project Director at SSEN Transmission, said:

“This is a welcome step forward for our transmission network locally and throughout our network area in Scotland.  The Section 37 consent from the Scottish Government for our Dunoon project reflects SSEN Transmission’s commitment to delivering a modern, efficient, and environmentally responsible transmission network that will enhance local network resilience, replace aging electrical infrastructure, and help us reach clean power and energy security goals.

"As we now move to the delivery phase of the project, we are committed to working constructively with local communities and businesses to minimise and mitigate construction impacts, alongside maximising the economic opportunities this investment will bring."
