SSE has this morning welcomed the news that the Prime Minister has taken action to cut taxes on electricity bills.
Martin Pibworth, Chief Executive of SSE, said:
"Cutting VAT gives immediate relief to homes and is a very welcome first step to making electricity as cheap as possible. Electrifying our economy is the way we take advantage of cheap, homegrown renewable power to cut bills, reduce energy dependence and boost economic growth."
SSE recently published its Powering Secure, Affordable Energy report in which it found that around 70% of the increase in domestic energy bills since 2017 has been driven by global commodity prices and inflation, underlining the UK’s continued exposure to volatile international gas markets and the case for accelerating the transition to UK-generated clean energy.
It says accelerating UK‑generated clean power and helping homes, businesses and industry to use more electricity instead of alternatives can cut energy bills by 35%, while boosting global competitiveness.
