SSE launches unified Biodiversity Toolkit to support nature-positive project delivery
16 Oct 2026SSE has launched a new Biodiversity Toolkit, bringing together expertise and methodologies developed across the Group into a single approach for assessing and delivering Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG).
The new toolkit replaces separate methodologies previously used across SSE, creating a consistent framework that can be applied across projects and technologies. Developed using the principles and evolution of the Defra Biodiversity Metric, it provides a transparent, evidence-based process for measuring biodiversity value and identifying opportunities to enhance nature.
As SSE continues to invest in renewable energy and electricity networks, the toolkit will help embed biodiversity considerations earlier in project development, improve consistency of reporting and support environmental decision-making across projects.
The launch supports SSE's commitment to achieving Biodiversity Net Gain across large capital projects and delivering Biodiversity Net Gain on newly consented developments, reflecting the company's wider ambition to support a nature-positive future.
The Biodiversity Toolkit suite includes:
The SSE Biodiversity Toolkit – the primary methodology used to assess and calculate biodiversity impacts and net gain outcomes across projects.
The SSE Optioneering Biodiversity Toolkit – designed to support project teams in comparing options and embedding biodiversity considerations early in project design and decision-making.
A User Guide – providing practical guidance on how to apply the toolkits and ensure a consistent, transparent and repeatable approach.
Together, the documents provide a clear framework for understanding, measuring and enhancing biodiversity outcomes, helping support the delivery of critical energy infrastructure while contributing to environmental enhancement.
Jennifer Wiggins, SSE Biodiversity Manager, said:
"This launch builds on SSE's long-standing commitment to biodiversity and nature-positive development. The new toolkit combines knowledge and experience from across the Group into a single methodology, creating a consistent approach to measuring, managing and enhancing biodiversity outcomes across our projects.
"We're making the Biodiversity Toolkit publicly available to help others put nature at the heart of decision-making and benefit from the lessons we've learned along the way. It's another example of SSE leading the way, turning ambition into action and helping raise the standard for biodiversity assessment and enhancement across all forms of development."
